In 1978 an improved SZD 48-2 Standard 2 was introduced, with a shorter aft fuselage and tail surfaces of reduved area. The wing was raised from the mid-wing to shoulder wing position and swept slightly forward to compensate for reduced fuselage length. Water ballast was increased.
